Tucumcari, New Mexico
Blue Swallow Motel
What it is
A 1939 motor court with hand-painted neon, attached garages, and rooms kept alive by generations of owners.
Why it matters
The definitive surviving Route 66 motel; Tucumcari's neon night is the road at its most alive.
What we experienced
We came through Tucumcari in daylight, still pushing to make Albuquerque that night. I have not seen this much neon anywhere else on the road — the Palomino, the abandoned Tucumcari Inn with its sign still intact — and the Blue Swallow is the one we stopped at and walked around. It gave me straight Cars vibes just standing in the lot. The one thing I would change about that day is timing it for dark, when all of it comes on.
