Amarillo, Texas
Cadillac Ranch
What it is
Ten Cadillacs buried nose-first in a wheat field since 1974, layered in decades of visitor paint.
Why it matters
The most famous piece of public art on Route 66 — strange, interactive, unforgettable.
What we experienced
We rolled in early — early enough that the field was still quiet and the gift shop across the road had not opened, so I never did get the pin I wanted. The paint was the part that stuck. We spent the first few minutes showing somebody how to work a can open, then handed over what we had: "take as much as you want." Ten Cadillacs nose-down in a wheat field, decades of other people's color on them, and a thin new layer of ours.
